No Human Rights for homosexual! Full stop!

No Human Rights for homosexual! Full stop! Morocco slams the LGBT community in a country where struggle to secure a law that protects us from violence of the state and the streets is held by a homophobic Minister of Human Rights.

Geneva, 21 September 2017

The Universal Periodic Review of Morocco regarding the LGBT rights has come to a disappointing outcome as homosexuality is still deemed a criminal offense.

Mustapha Ramid is clearly still holding on to his homophobic attitudes. Ramid,  the State Minister in charge of Human Rights of Morocco said that Morocco is committed to protection of human rights, yet he on the name of the whole country, will not accept legalizing homosexuality in Morocco. Ramid stated that the moral system in Morocco does not allows 'us' to legalize same-sex relationships adding that the government and the constitution is clear about the issue of homosexuality. As a result, Article 489 stands as it is now, meaning homosexuality is punishable between 6 to 3 years prison term and fines of MAD 120 to 1200.

The Moroccan LGBT community have been campaigning to legalize homosexuality in response the the several assaults and jailing of gays in Morocco in recent months. However, the outcomes do not show that the path toward freedom for the LGBT in Morocco is going to be easy. The situation of the LGBT community in Morocco has become the centre of controversy with several attacks on gays as the government is keeping silent in jailing the victims instead. "The Moroccan LGBT Community: Decriminalize Homosexuality in Morocco" has noted several attacks and jailing of gays in different cities in Morocco this year.

February 24th, 2017 :The Primary Court in Tangier  sentenced two men to six months in prison for ‘engaging in homosexual acts’ on 24 February. They were also fined 1,000 dirham ($99, €94) each.

July 4th, 2017: Two gay friends were followed by a car in Casablanca by 5 bearded men and brutally attacked with an iron stick. The two young men 25 suffered severe injuries and broken teeth. None of the victims was able to report the incident as both of them were afraid to be arrested for being gay.

August 25th, 2017: a Moroccan  Film Director called his fan on Facebook to rape a famous gay actor instead of raping children, elderly people and animals. After a day Adouma (the gay actor) was brutally attacked by a mob and received rape threats from people all over Morocco.

September 5th, 2017: a police man from the city of Safi in South West of Morocco was arrested and now waiting his trial as he was discovered to be gay.

Though several human rights organisation raised their concerns about the worrying situation of the LGBT community in Morocco, there have been no further amendment to the homophobic attitudes of Moroccan Minister in charge of human rights. This decision did not come a surprising behaviour as Mr Ramid already attacked gays in Morocco when he was forced to speak out about the bloody attacks on the gay couple in Beni Mellal by an angry mob in 2016.
