It seems like Mr Mustapha Ramid, the Moroccan
minister in charge of human rights has not had enough of attacking gays and
human rights organisations that defends gays in Morocco.
In his
latest homophobic rant, Ramid described the LGBT community as the ‘filth’ of
society. ‘Enough is enough’ he expressed after he was asked a question about
Morocco’s disappointing response to UN Universal
Periodic Review during the opening session of a regional workshop on “National
mechanisms for the prevention of torture in North Africa”, at the National
Library of Rabat. Ramid stated that “homosexuals are being given too much
attention lately when in fact these people are filth”. He also commented that
some lobbies want Morocco to left criminal charges on gays and legalise
homosexuality in Morocco, but Morocco has been clear in his stand toward this
matters like homosexuality and consensual sexual relationship outside marriage.
The LGBT community in Morocco is furious about the homophobic
slurs which this time went too far. It is well noted that the current Minister
of human right is notorious for his anti-gay sentiment and his lousy reputation
of attacking NGOs that defends the LGBT community in Morocco. While serving
as Morocco’s Minister of Justice Ramid justified the horrific mob attack
against Beni Mellah gays by stating that “that homosexuals should avoid
“provoking society”. Minister Ramid said article 489 should be retained and that
any attempt to decriminalize homosexuality would cross a “red line.”
In a response to the outrageous
comments about the LGBT in Morocco, Tarek Najji, head of Association Akiliat, which defends minorities in Morocco, stated
that those whom Mr Ramid is calling filth are citizens like all the other
citizens. As for those he is accusing of spreading homosexuality, they are campaigning
for the dignity of human beings. They are defending the rights of citizens
added Najji. Najji also expressed his worry that human rights in Morocco is
getting worst and that Mr Ramid should at the lead defending human rights
instead of attacking them.
The LGBT community in Morocco
though the difficult situation and restrictive laws they launch their hashtag campaign
#We_ Are_ Citizens_ Not_ Filth to denounce the homophobia of the Moroccan state
which urged lately under the Islamic party ruling the current government.
Homosexuality is punishable in Morocco. The state still prosecute and imprison gays under article 489 of Morocco's Penal Code, which provides prison sentence of between 6 months to 3 years for homosexuality.
